WRVO presents an archived edition of the popular weekly essay, The Nature of Things, from Naturalist John Weeks. Every week WRVO will dive deep into our archive. We'll begin with episodes from 1984 and eventually come all the way to the conclusion of the series in June of 2006.

John Weeks was born on August 21, 1924 on a little farm in West
Webster, NY. His father was a commercial artist, his mother a writer and reciter
of dialect essays. His early interest in nature was fostered by his parents, his
5 siblings and his teachers.
At Cornell he studied ornithology and wildlife
management graduating in 1949 with a BS in Agriculture. Ten year later he
obtained an MS from Syracuse University majoring in plant ecology.
His career
included: Conservartion Biologist for the NYS Conservation Department, Associate
Professor of Biology at Oswego State, Founding Director of The Rogers
Environmental Education Center at Sherburne, NY and Director of Onondaga Nature
Centers/Centers for Nature Education orignally headquartered at Beaver
Lake.
During his years at Oswego he concentrated on the development of Rice
Creek Field Station. While working for ONC/CNE he oversaw development of
programming for Beaver Lake, Baltimore Woods and the Cayuga Nature
Center.
After retiring in 1982 he designed and developed environmental
exhibits and consulted with various education groups in NY State on designing
and programming Nature Centers. He also assisted Cayuga County and the local
citizens in the development of the Sterling Nature Center.
During that time
he also wrote 1000 nature columns for CNY daily and weekly newspapers. In 1982,
with the assistance of the Rice Creek staff he initiated “The Nature of
Things” a weekly 5 minute radio spot produced and aired by WRVO.
He and
his wife Esther were married in June of 1946. They have five children and 4
grandchildren.
