WRVO's Community Forum brings you into the discussion with a lively debate about topics of local concern.  WRVO Community Forums are open to the public. We welcome you to join us and be part of the live audience. There is no ticket to grab or spot to reserve. Topic: The Science Behind Hydrofracking

Panelists:

Susan Riha
-  Susan is a professor in the Dept. of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Cornell University. She received her PhD in Soil Science from Washington State University in 1980 and shortly after joined the Cornell faculty as the Charles L. Pack Research Professor of Forest Soils. Her research interests are in soil-plant-atmosphere relations and in dynamic simulation modeling of the impact of the environment on plants. She works on both environmental and plant production problems on the state, national and international levels. She has served as co-chair of the Dept. of Earth and Atmospherics Sciences and the Director for Sponsored Research for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Bryce Hand - Bryce is a Emeritus Professor of Geology at Syracuse University. He received his B.A. '58:  Antioch College.  (While an undergrad, worked 6 months each at:  U.S. Geological Survey Geochemistry Branch in D.C.; USGS Ground Water Branch, Trenton NJ;  and Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia.) M.S. '61:  University Southern California.  (Marine geology, focusing on deep-water bottom sediments off southern California.) Ph.D. '64:  Pennsylvania State University.  (Studied beach and coastal dune sediments.)  He taught at Amherst College beginning in '64. Joined SU Department of Geology in '69 and retired in '99. Field:  sedimentology, chiefly dynamics of sediment transport. Relevant to our present discussion:  In 1989, Hand authored Radon in Onondaga County, New York: Paleohydrogeology and redistribution of uranium in Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, which appeared in the journal Geology.  It was a technical version of an earlier report to the County, on radon deriving from the Marcellus Shale.
